The map shows the estimated distribution of PM2.5 particulate matter across Greece, so you can quickly get a clear picture of air quality in the area that matters to you. The map’s colour surface shows PM2.5 levels. In general, cooler shades correspond to lower values, while warmer shades indicate higher pollution. The legend in the bottom bar of the page maps each colour to a concentration in μg m-3.
What PM2.5 is
PM2.5 refers to very small airborne particles with a diameter of up to 2.5 micrometres — roughly thirty times finer than a human hair. Because they are extremely fine, they can stay suspended in the air for hours and reach deep into the respiratory system.
How the picture is produced
Values are based on real-time measurements from sensor stations and on computational tools that combine that data into a coherent, high spatial resolution picture. The map expresses the best available estimate at that moment for each area, not an official measurement.
Why it matters
Air pollution is invisible, but its effects on health are measurable. Increased exposure to PM2.5 can strain respiratory and cardiovascular health, particularly for children, older people, pregnant women and anyone with asthma or a chronic condition.
Why watch your own area
PM2.5 levels change substantially within a single day and differ from one neighbourhood to the next. Knowing what is happening near you helps you decide when to air out your home, when to exercise outdoors, and when it is worth avoiding.
